All electrical installations or equipment will deteriorate with age and use. A regime of simple user checks and periodic inspection and testing in compliance with bs 7671 should identify defects before they pose a serious hazard and will ensure that equipment remains safe to use. This topic describes what to look for when carrying out inspections, how frequently tests should be carried out and who should do them.

On your eicr, electrical certificate or electrical installation condition report, it will notify you whether your electrical installation is “satisfactory” or “unsatisfactory”, the outcome depends on the installation and can be explained if you require more information after receiving the certificate.
Members are subject to ongoing periodic technical assessment in accordance with select’s criteria for membership. These assessments will not normally be chargeable but failure on the part of the member to promptly rectify notified deviations found during inspections will incur charges where further inspections are required. Deviations found during second or subsequent inspections may also incur charges. Select member firms cannot ordinarily initiate these assessments but can obtain guidance and assistance from select’s director of technical services and utilise the inspection on request described above.
