Produced from 1997 to 2006, it was the successor to the E36 3 Series, which ceased production in 2000. BMW introduced the fourth generation of the 3 Series, the E46, for the 1999 model year.
The E46 was offered in a variety of body styles including coupe, convertible, sedan, and wagon. The BMW 3 Series Coupé (E46, also E46/2) only arrived in 1998, almost a year after the successful presentation of the BMW 3 Series Sedan (E46/4) in the marketplace.
