With the right strategy and a methodical approach, it is entirely possible to refresh your space by removing the tile while preserving the existing cabinetry.
The primary motivation for tackling a tile removal while keeping the cabinets intact is the significant reduction in labor and disposal costs. Hauling heavy tile and mortar to the dump is a major expense and physical undertaking. Furthermore, leaving the cabinets undisturbed protects your plumbing and electrical work, preventing the need for potentially expensive reconfiguration. Preparing for the Project

The goal is to achieve a subfloor that is as level and clean as possible. After the bulk of the adhesive is gone, thoroughly sweep and vacuum the entire area. For a final cleanup, a shop vacuum is highly effective at removing the fine dust and debris that remains, ensuring the surface is ready for the next step.
Installing the New Flooring
With the old tile and adhesive completely cleared, you are ready to install your new floor covering, completing the transformation.
If you are installing new tile, you will need to apply a fresh layer of thinset mortar using a notched trowel, ensuring proper adhesion and leveling. For a faster and often more practical option, consider luxury vinyl plank (LVP) or engineered flooring. These materials are designed to lock together and can be installed directly over a clean, level concrete subfloor, eliminating the need for additional adhesive. This direct installation method is significantly faster and less messy, allowing you to enjoy your renovated kitchen much sooner.
