The Business Model Canvas (BMC) is a strategic management and lean startup template for developing new or documenting existing business models. It was introduced by Alexander Osterwalder and Yves Pigneur in their 2010 book "Business Model Generation". The BMC is a visual chart with nine blocks describing a firm's or product's business model. It is an adaptable tool that allows entrepreneurs, strategists, and other business professionals to describe, design, challenge, invent, and pivot their business models.

By providing a common language and a shared visual map, the BMC enables teams to align their efforts and gain a holistic understanding of how an organization creates, delivers, and captures value. It's a practical tool that has been widely adopted by businesses, startups, and even educational institutions to foster innovation and strategic thinking.

The Nine Building Blocks of the Business Model Canvas
The BMC consists of nine interconnected blocks, which are grouped into four categories: Customer Segments, Value Propositions, Infrastructure, and Revenue Streams.

The blocks are as follows:
Customer Segments

The first category, Customer Segments, comprises three blocks: Customer Segments, Channels, and Customer Relationships.
The Customer Segments block identifies the different groups of people or organizations an enterprise aims to reach and serve. It's crucial to understand that a business model can have multiple customer segments, each with its unique needs, behaviors, and preferences.
Channels

The Channels block represents how a company communicates with and reaches its customer segments. It includes all communication channels used to acquire, retain, and satisfy customers.
Customer Relationships
The Customer Relationships block describes the types of relationships a company establishes with specific customer segments. It includes the level of interaction, support, and engagement with customers.

Value Propositions
The Value Propositions category includes two blocks: Value Propositions and Key Resources.

The Value Propositions block describes the bundle of products and services that create value for a specific customer segment. It's the core of the business model, answering the question: 'Why do customers buy, use?'
Key Resources
The Key Resources block lists the most important assets required to make a business model work. These can be physical, financial, intellectual, or human resources.
Infrastructure
The Infrastructure category consists of two blocks: Key Activities and Key Partnerships.
The Key Activities block lists the most important things a company must do to make its business model work. These activities can be operational or political in nature.
Key Partnerships
The Key Partnerships block identifies the network of suppliers and partners that make the business model work. It includes strategic alliances that reduce risk, improve efficiency, and create competitive advantages.
Revenue Streams
The final category, Revenue Streams, includes the Cost Structure and Revenue Streams blocks.
The Revenue Streams block lists the cash a company generates from each customer segment. It's crucial to understand that a business model can have multiple revenue streams, and each can be generated through different means.
Cost Structure
The Cost Structure block lists all major cost elements incurred by a company to operate its business model. It includes the costs of the key resources, key activities, and key partnerships.
The Business Model Canvas is a powerful tool that enables businesses to think beyond products and services, focusing instead on the entire system of a company – a collection of business models. It's a living, breathing document that should be reviewed, updated, and challenged regularly to ensure it remains relevant and effective. By using the BMC, businesses can foster innovation, encourage strategic thinking, and ultimately, create more value for their customers.
