Greenpeace UK gender pay gap

Since 6 April 2018 employers in Great Britain with more than 250 staff have been required to disclose specific information about their gender pay gap. Although we employ fewer than 250 people, we have chosen to publish our gender pay gap in line with our strong commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. This is our updated information for 2019.

The gender pay gap is the difference in the hourly rate of pay of men and women, expressed as a percentage of men’s salary. It is separate from equal pay, which focuses on the pay differences between men and women performing the same or similar work, and which our pay policy, pay grading, and job evaluation system all protect against.

The statutory reporting asks for two separate figures based on two different ways of calculating averages: mean and median.

Key points for Greenpeace UK

  1.  Our mean gender pay gap across all employees is 6.1% compared to a national figure of 17.1%
  2. Our median gender pay gap across all employees is 4.9% compared to a national figure of 17.9%
  3. This compares favourably to the UK national figures of 17.4% (mean) and 18.4% (median)
  4. The most significant driver of Greenpeace UK’s current gender pay gap is the fact that a high proportion of new recruits in recent years have been female: 74% of our employees with under five years of service are female, compared to 49% of our employees with over 5 years’ service.
  5. Women currently occupy at least 50% of posts at all senior levels of the organisation: grades 5, 6 and Directors.
  6. We will continue to monitor this pay gap as part of our overall strategy for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
