Greenpeace welcomes Scotland’s move on bottle return scheme

Publication date: 8th May 2019

Greenpeace delivered a 29foot-long plastic bottle artwork to Environment Secretary Michael Gove to urge him not to ‘lose his bottle’ and press on with an all-inclusive deposit return scheme.

Commenting on today’s announcement on Scotland’s new Deposit Return Scheme, Willie Mackenzie, oceans expert for Greenpeace, said:

“We welcome news that Scotland will lead the way by introducing a deposit return scheme for drinks bottles and cans. This is a practical solution to stop material like plastic being thrown away and ending up in our rivers and oceans.

“Crucially Scotland’s scheme will be far-reaching and include glass bottles, which is what the public supports and will drastically boost recycling collection rates.

“The government in Westminster must now follow suit without delay and introduce a deposit return scheme which covers bottles of all sizes and materials.”
