Wiring a 3-Way Switch in a Junction Box: A Comprehensive Guide
Embarking on a DIY electrical project? Wiring a 3-way switch in a junction box can seem daunting, but with the right steps and safety precautions, it's a task you can tackle confidently. This guide will walk you through the process, ensuring your switch is wired correctly and safely.
Understanding 3-Way Switches and Junction Boxes
Before we dive into the wiring process, let's understand the components at hand. A 3-way switch allows you to control a light from two different locations. It's typically used in hallways, staircases, or large rooms. A junction box, on the other hand, is a plastic or metal box that houses electrical connections and provides a safe enclosure for wiring.
Tools and Materials Needed
- 3-way switches (2)
- 14/3 non-metallic (NM) sheathed cable (enough to reach both switch boxes)
- 14/2 NM cable (for power to the first switch box)
- Wire stripper
- Needle-nose pliers
- Screwdriver
- Fish tape (if needed)
- Wire connectors (wire nuts)
- Electrical tape
Preparation: Safety First
Before you start, ensure the power to the circuit is off. Use a non-contact voltage tester to double-check that the wires are indeed dead. Always prioritize safety when working with electricity.

Running the Cable
First, run the 14/3 cable from the power source to the first switch box, and then to the second switch box. You'll also need to run a 14/2 cable from the power source to the first switch box. If you're fishing the cable through walls, use a fish tape to pull the cable through.
Wiring the First Switch Box
Strip about 2 inches of sheathing from the cables in the first switch box. You should have one 14/2 cable (power) and one 14/3 cable (for the 3-way switch).
Connecting the Power Source
Connect the black (hot) wire from the 14/2 cable to the common (black) terminal on the first 3-way switch. Connect the white (neutral) wire to the neutral wires in the 14/3 cable using a wire nut. Connect the ground wires together using a wire nut.

Wiring the Switch
Now, connect the 14/3 cable's black, red, and white wires to the traveler terminals (brass-colored) on the first switch. It doesn't matter which traveler wire goes where, as long as you match the wires at both switches.
Wiring the Second Switch Box
Strip the 14/3 cable in the second switch box. Connect the black, red, and white traveler wires to the traveler terminals on the second 3-way switch. Connect the black (hot) wire from the 14/3 cable to the common (black) terminal on the second switch.
Testing Your Work
Turn the power back on at the main panel and test your switches. They should now control the light from both locations. If not, double-check your wiring and ensure all connections are tight.
Final Touches
Secure the switches in their boxes, ensuring they're flush with the wall. Replace the cover plates and enjoy your newly wired 3-way switch!
