Before breaking ground, it is essential to understand why this project is necessary. Surface water naturally flows downhill, and without a defined path, it will pool in low-lying areas. This pooling can saturate the soil around your home's foundation, leading to hydrostatic pressure that can cause cracks and leaks. An underground drainage system, often referred to as a French drain, acts as an artificial slope, redirecting water away from vulnerable areas to a safe discharge point, such as a storm drain or dry well.
Phase 1: Planning and Assessment
Site Evaluation and Legal Checks
The success of your project begins long before the first shovel hits the dirt. You must conduct a thorough assessment of your property to identify the source of the water problem. Is it runoff from a neighbor's property, or is it groundwater seeping up through the soil? Understanding the water source dictates the complexity of your solution.
