Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

Construction Crane diagramDrawings of steam locomotives and other rolling stock (about 26,000 drawings, circa 1900-1960s), including drawings of parts and components in addition to erecting drawings, depict all classes of equipment operated by the railroad. Diagram books contain small-format drawings and specification sheets for most of the same equipment. Car and locomotive record books (1879-1956) provide statistical data on individual pieces of rolling stock, including maintenance and repair records.

Expand/CollapseSTEAM LOCOMOTIVE DRAWINGS

Drawings are original ink on linen and are for Great Northern steam locomotives and tenders, including all parts from small nuts and bolts to erecting drawings showing the entire side view of a constructed locomotive.

There are four nominal sizes of drawings: 10 in. x 14 in.; 14 in. x 20 in.; 20 in. x 28 in.; and 28 in. x 40 in. Some drawings are longer than their nominal size; the 28 x 40 nominal size includes drawings as large as 32 inches high by 10 feet long.

There is a separate list of major parts drawings, as well as a 3-inch by 5-inch card index that was received with the drawings from Burlington Northern.
