| Abstract: | Steam locomotive, erecting and parts drawings from the Great Northern and Northern Pacific Railway Companies. Almost all of the drawings are original inked tracings on starched linen paper, produced by the railroad for its master files. In general these files are complete (containing both erecting and parts drawings) only for those engines still in service at the end of World War II. A few erecting drawings for earlier engines were acquired, and several parts drawings date back to the 1880s. Most of the drawings are from the period 1900-1945. | |

SCOPE AND CONTENTS
The Minnesota Historical Society has acquired over 6100 drawings for steam locomotives and tenders of the Great Northern Railway. Approximately 65 of these are erecting drawings (side or sectional views of complete locomotives). The rest are parts drawings.
In addition to the Great Northern drawings, the Society also owns 15 erecting drawings for locomotives of the Northern Pacific Railway, and one erecting drawing for a Northern Pacific tender.
Both the Great Northern and Northern Pacific drawings were donated to the Society by Burlington Northern Inc.
From the total of 6100 drawings, 260 were selected for microfilming. A further seven drawings were added to the microfilm although the originals were never received by the Society. These seven are blueprints of original Great Northern erecting drawings. The blueprints were loaned for copying by Mr. George T. Wier of St. Paul, Minnesota. The originals are apparently no longer in existence.
The microfilm is arranged in twenty-one sets. A copy of this introduction is Set 1. Each of the other sets contains all of the available major drawings for one or more sub-classes of engines. Major drawings are defined as engine erecting elevations, engine erecting sections, engine main frames, tender tanks, tender frames, and tender trucks. If a major drawing is missing from a set, the drawing was not received from Burlington Northern. For three sub-classes of engines, selected parts drawings were also microfilmed.
Some drawings are related to more than one sub-class of engine and thus appear more than once within the microfilm. Most of these drawings are for tenders. The duplication enables each set to be complete in itself. For more complete information on the individual drawings in each set, see the list of microfilmed drawings on the following pages.
