BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Augustine Boyer Hawley was born November 6, 1833 in Caroline, Tompkins County, New York to Isaac Augustus (1797-1867) and Ann Eliza Boyer Hawley (1812-1902). He was educated in early youth by his father, once a teacher of the classics at the University of Virginia. He was later sent to nearby Ithaca for further schooling and entered Hobart College at the age of fourteen, graduating in 1852. He attended Geneva Medical College until 1854 and instructed classes in anatomy for a year. He studied surgery abroad at Edinburgh University, Dublin, London and Paris. In 1857 he went to Minnesota and practiced medicine in Red Wing for the rest of his life.
He married Harriet Bowman Blackstock in 1865 and had nine children: John, Edward, Mary, George, Elizabeth, William, Augustine Jr., Anna (Anne MacDonald), and Henry. He died September 20, 1878 in Red Wing.

Includes letters written by members of the Hawley and related families. Much of the correspondence gives genealogical data on the many branches of the family. Letters of particular interest include: | |||||||||||
September 1812-June 1815: Includes a number of letters pertaining to the War of 1812. Most of them were written between Henry and William Grindage. Henry Grindage was a major in the 15th regiment. Information is given on the recruitment of soldiers, descriptions of naval battles on the Great Lakes, and the encampment of the 15th regiment on Lake Champlain, New York. Also included is correspondence from Lieutenant Colonel Josiah Snelling, approving Henry Grindage's request for retirement from the army (June 28, 1815). | |||||||||||

February 27, 1855; May 16, 1856; and November 16, 1857: Letters written by Augustine B. Hawley from Edinburgh, Scotland, to his parents, Isaac A. Hawley, Geneva, New York. Hawley was attending the University of Edinburgh Medical School at this time. The letters give descriptions of Edinburgh, Scotland, school life and social life. The letter dated May 16, 1856, contains an interesting letterhead of Edinburgh. | |||||||||||
January 26, 1856: E. R. Welles, Vicksburg, Mississippi, to Augustine B. Hawley, Edinburgh. A long letter describing Welles' trip from New York to Chicago, then from Chicago to St. Louis and Vicksburg, Mississippi. Descriptions are given of the cities of St. Louis and Vicksburg, of Mississippi River travel and of the steamer Crystal Palace, on which Welles made the voyage. | |||||||||||
June 9, 1857: Richard M. Boyer, Georgetown, D. C., to Ann Eliza Hawley. A letter describing the rush of applicants for government positions, particularly in the diplomatic corps. Mention is also made of an attack on Washington by groups of persons from Baltimore. Boyer speaks of the possibility of dispatching troops to Utah to enforce government policies on the Mormon colony. | |||||||||||

November 30, 1909; August 2 and September 2, 1911; and February 14, 1913: Correspondence from Hamilton W. Mabie, American author, to Leulah Judson, who married Edwin Hawley of Minneapolis. The letter of February 14, 1913, gives a description of Mabie's trip to Japan and his reception by the Japanese people and officials. | |||||||||||

Legal and financial papers, 1767-1924. | |||||||||||
The legal and financial papers consist of a number of deeds, wills (1767-1872), and receipts (1807-1924), of the Hawley and related families. The earliest deed, dated April 3, 1767, is between John Judson and his son, John Judson, Jr., both of New Stratford, Connecticut. By this document, Judson deeded six acres of his land in New Stratford to his son. Other early deeds are: David Hawley to John Judson (1801), William J. Pattilo to Jacob Yaple (1824); and Joseph Speed to Isaac Hawley (1836). These deeds are to land in Huntington, Connecticut and Tompkins County, New York. | |||||||||||
Other legal papers include: various powers of attorney, articles of agreement between Phineas Rennet and Edwin Hawley concerning a steam engine invented by Rennet (1836), survey notes of land in Caroline, Tompkins County, New York (1847) and the will of William Blackstock, Allegheny, Pennsylvania (1872). The receipts (1807-1924) concern the Isaac Hawley family. Most of them are for money paid for music lessons for the Hawley children. |

There are 14 pages of news clippings (1905-1944) concerning various members of the Hawley family. Miscellaneous papers include: a salutatorian address (1852) delivered by Augustine B. Hawley at Hobart College, Geneva, New York that is handwritten in Latin; "Teaching Can Be Fun," by Anne MacDonald Hawley which includes reminiscences (1898-1932) of her teaching experiences in Minnesota, New Jersey, and Tennessee; diary (August 9-September 2, 1888) of a trip to Niagara Falls, New York and a Great Lakes trip to Duluth, Minnesota; baptismal records of various members of the A. B. Hawley family; school report cards of the Hawley children; and Augustine B. Hawley's report cards (1849, 1851) from Geneva College. |
