Expand/CollapseSCOPE AND CONTENTS

The numerous magazine and newspaper articles, from state, national, and international publications, include those where the Governor was featured or interviewed or there is information about his administration.

The photographs document all aspects of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor's activities, particularly the inauguration; trips throughout Minnesota, other states, and foreign countries; visits of foreign dignitaries; on location productions of the Lunch with the Governor radio show; and events at the Capitol and the Residence. They also highlight the Lieutenant Governor's school visits throughout the state.

The videocassettes mainly cover the Governor's appearances on local, national, and international television, but also detail his and the Lieutenant Governor's school visits and other public events. Included are his 1999, 2001, and 2002 State of the State addresses; appearances on Larry King Live, the TODAY Show, Hardball, Good Morning America, Meet the Press, The Tonight Show, and The Young and the Restless; and his announcement he was leaving the Reform Party.

The sound cassettes include an incomplete set of the Governor's Lunch with the Governor weekly call-in show on WCCO radio and a number of radio interviews and appearances, primarily featuring the Governor and Lieutenant Governor. The majority are from Minnesota Public Radio's Midday show.

The subject files contain both the office's operational files, including its correspondence and inter-office memos, and its subject/topical files. Topics covered include the baseball stadium, the Governor's Big Plan, the budget, a Civil War flag controversy, the 2000 U.S. census, dairy reform, a 1999 visit of Czech president Vaclav Havel, IQ [Internet Quorum] management, The Jade Foundation, legislative sessions, media requests, Minnesota's September 11, 2001 memorial, the National Governors' Association, NorthStar Project, Lunch with the Governor radio show, State of the State addresses, travel costs, unicameral legislation, NAFTA [North American Free Trade Agreement], XFL, Y2K compliance, and relations with the departments of commerce and revenue, Office of Citizenship and Volunteer Services, and Reform Party.

There are also captures of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor's websites (January 2, 2003) and several oversize items, including a citizens' petition for change in Metropolitan Airports Commission leadership, a SPAM history album, and the 2001 Certificate of Entitlement for the state's eight representatives to the U.S. Congress.

The photographs are arranged in three series, two by print size and one digital series. Each series is in chronological order. The first series contains 4 x 6 inch color photographs and negatives; the second, mostly 4 x 10 inch or larger color photographs and negatives; the third, digital images. Although the first two series often contain both the photograph and the negative, there are also cases of just photographs and just negatives.

Several cassettes were accompanied by cover letters, which are noted in the following list and are housed in a folder in each appropriate box. Historical Society staff have not viewed the individual recordings; information was taken from the cassettes’ labels.

SPAM Museum: History Album, 2001. 1 volume.
According to a note inside the album, this is a replica of a history album presented to national television anchorman, Tom Brokaw, who was scheduled to dedicate the SPAM Museum in Austin, Minnesota, on the weekend of September 14, 2001. According to the note, the Governor’s office assisted in securing Mr. Brokaw for the dedication. The album contains reproductions, apparently, of letters, photographs, newsletters and other items of the Hormel Foods Corporation. All of the items concern SPAM and its role in World War II.
