Common Culprits: Moles and Voles
The most frequent cause of random dirt mounds in a grassy area is the activity subterranean mammals. Moles are insectivores that live almost entirely underground, creating complex tunnel networks as they search for grubs and worms. As they push through the soil, they create two types of structures: subsurface runways and deep tunnels. The deep tunnels end at the surface with volcano-shaped mounds, while the shallow runways create visible ridges. Voles, on the other hand, are herbivores that create shallow tunnels close to the surface. Heavy rainfall can create temporary tunnels in compacted soil; as water drains downward, it can leave behind small piles of dirt in areas where the soil eroded.
