Oe1101 is Online is a Mahoutsukai no Yakusoku AU fan fiction set in modern-world 2006, and told in the form of Instant Messenger chatlogs and Profile page and picture Updates.

You may wonder why I haven't just submitted this as a fan fiction to AO3. Reason being, I wanted to make this an immersive story-telling experience, and I felt like a fan fiction told in chatlogs wouldn't really work well unless I went all out and re-created the Instant Messenger interface, and set everything out as it would be if this were really happening over instant messenger.

I've taken the time to make some special Famicon-style remixes of some of the songs mentioned in this story. Play the music at the start of each chapter to further enhance your 2000's experience!

Content Warnings and Themes

CWs: swearing, smoking, irresponsible alcohol consumption and getting blackout drunk, brief mention of vomiting (non-descriptive), drug use/buying (weed/cannabis, others not explicitly specified), talk of violence and fighting (non-explicit), Owen comparing cakes/sweets to blood and wounds (as he does in canon) some descriptions of mouths + kissing, mentions of sex and sexual attraction but otherwise is non-explicit, strained relationships with parents and family.

More CWs may be added as the story progresses, the above are based on all the planned content that is to come.

Context and Background

Oe1101 is Online is inspired by the game series Emily is Away, created by Kyle Seeley. You can download the first game for free on Steam! If you end up enjoying this fic, I highly encourage you to play the game(s) that inspired it.

This story takes place from 2006 onwards, in a time before mainstream social media existed, and Instant Messaging was the primary online source of talking to your friends outside of education besides texting. Sanbaka are just starting their 2 years worth of higher education (Sixth Form, in this case) after finishing high school. Sixth Form is a higher education variant available in the country I live in, as an alternative to college, where students can choose what to study and take their A-Levels for the chosen subject. For those of you unfamiliar with Sixth Form, just think of it as a less-expansive version of college which is situated in the same grounds as its associated high school.

The typing styles used for Sanbaka in this fic are to reflect the popular styles used online and in texting in the mid-2000s. There will be deliberate grammar and spelling mistakes in some cases, which I understand may make it hard for people who are not native English speakers to understand, or for those using an auto-translate. I may in the future release a "cleaned-up" version without the text shortening and style in order to make this an easier experience for the wider audience.

It is also worth pointing out that Sanbaka are quite out of character in this fic, as this is not set in the wizard's universe, and I have projected the style of 2006-style IM users onto them in order to better fit the setting and timeline. I feel like Owen might sound like he's from Mean Girls or something with the way he types. Bradley is your typical braincell-less bad boy with a soft side, and Mithra is, well, he's the only one vaguely in character. If you don't like reading fics where characters are not as they are in canon, this may not be the story for you.

Sanbaka also all live with their respective parents in this fic, which is very odd for me to write given that we never find out much about their parents in canon. In this AU, Bradley lives with his Dad only, Mithra with him Mum only, and Owen being the only one with both parents present. Mithra and Owen are only children, while Bradley has multiple step-siblings whom he does not see very often. This is not really plot-relevant at time of writing, but thought it was interesting to point out anyway.

This fiction focuses primarily around the relationship of Owen and Bradley and how they find things changing between them as they progress with Sixth Form. There will also be exploration of the relationships between Bradley and Nero and Owen and Cain. Other members of the Mahoyaku cast will be mentioned throughout and may in the future chapters be part of IM chatlogs.
