8 years ago i became a scrummaster at a startup that had 10 people. There were mostly engineers, 3 of whom were remote. I had some social capital with this group since we worked together at a prior startup, and because of this they hired me into the new company strategically. I did not have training as a scrummaster, and so i went to ken schwaber’s two-day course to become certified. I learned in other ways too, such as by talking with a local scrummaster who i was introduced to by one of our founders. He told me that “being a scrummaster is a process of making yourself obsolete. http://as7.s3-website.ap-northeast-3.amazonaws.com/Scrum-Team-Coaching/index.html
Tasks and responsibilities of a Scrum Master
The scrum master is part of a specific scrum team and plays a leading role in this team.
They are in the workplace every day, know the team inside out, and know exactly what’s going on. The scrum master’s concrete tasks:
ensure that the team works according to the scrum rules. Organize practical aspects, such as planning meetings, looking for process improvements, and ensuring that the developers have the right tools. Solve problems (impediments) that the team can’t solve itself. In addition, they support the team in the broadest sense of the word. For example, they do this by helping the product owner with the user stories or by stepping in during testing.
In the ideal agile world, a team would manage its own processes and tools. Yet we’ve found that many teams making the leap to agile often rely on the scrum master as the owner of their process. It takes time for responsibility and authority to diffuse through a team. In this transformative context, the role can be as lightweight as scheduling the scrum ceremonies or as involved as any other scrum team member. Although the scrum guide lists how the scrum master serves other scrum roles, this is not an exhaustive list of responsibilities. Indeed, we find scrum masters often perform some or all of the following, not all of which are defined by scrum:.

professional scrum master course content theory and first principles delegates explore the uncertainties of software and how an empirical process of regular inspection and adaption is an effective strategy to manage it. We’ll contrast the scrum approach of frequently refining an imperfect plan, with the traditional approach of anticipating every variable through up-front design, architecture and requirements analysis. The scrum framework we define and describe the core elements of scrum and relate them back to agile principles and empiricism: scrum roles: product owner; development team; scrum master. Focus is placed on the accountabilities of each role and, therefore, great teams are built on a foundation of clear responsibilities.
Although there are plenty of coaches that specialize in extreme programming (xp), kanban, and other specific agile methodologies, it’s a good bet that most agile coaches got their start with the scrum framework. Why? starting with scrum will give you a solid foundation in understanding the basics of an agile mindset and the agile manifesto, as well as agile principles and values.
