  • 2-liter plastic bottles (as many as you want for your light display)
  • String lights (preferably with small, white LED bulbs)
  • Scissors or a craft knife
  • Tape measure
  • Permanent marker
  • Clear or white spray paint (optional, for a frosted look)

Prepare Your Bottles

First, clean and dry your 2-liter bottles. Then, using your tape measure and permanent marker, mark lines around the bottle where you'll cut. For a classic look, cut the bottles in half horizontally, just below the label. For a more whimsical effect, try cutting them at different heights or angles.

Carefully cut along the marked lines using scissors or a craft knife. Be sure to wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from any plastic shavings. Once you've cut all your bottles, you'll have the base for your DIY Christmas lights.

Paint Your Bottles (Optional)

For a frosted or snow-kissed look, spray paint the inside of your bottle halves with clear or white spray paint. This will also help reflect the light from your string lights, making them shine brighter. Allow the paint to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Add Your String Lights

Now it's time to add the magic. Take your string lights and carefully thread them through the opening of each bottle half. You can either place the light inside the bottle or have it hang outside, depending on the look you prefer. Make sure to leave enough wire between each bottle to create the desired spacing.

Once you've threaded all the lights through the bottles, plug in your string lights to ensure they're working properly. If any lights aren't working, you may need to adjust their placement or replace the bulb.

Hang Your DIY Christmas Lights

Now comes the fun part - hanging your DIY Christmas lights! You can hang them from your gutters, wrap them around trees, or even place them in your garden. To hang them, you can use Command hooks, nails, or even hot glue them to a wooden dowel for a unique look.

Remember to leave enough wire between each bottle to allow for some movement, especially if you're hanging them outdoors where they may be exposed to wind or weather.
