This is the section we spend the most time on, because it is the section that decides everything else.

The Standard We Hold

Peptide Works supplies peptides at 99% purity or above for standard sequences, and 98% purity or above for structurally complex peptides.

The gap between those two numbers is not a hedge, and it is worth explaining rather than glossing over.

Peptide synthesis proceeds one step at a time. Amino acids are added in sequence, and at every coupling step the efficiency is slightly less than perfect. For a short, well-behaved sequence, those small imperfections accumulate very little, so 99% purity is a reasonable and achievable target. For longer sequences — or sequences that are difficult to assemble, such as those with aggregation-prone regions or secondary structure that interferes with clean elongation — the same per-step efficiency produces a population of products sitting very close together in chemical space: deletions, truncations and side-products similar enough to the target that separating them is far from trivial.

The arithmetic here is unforgiving, and it deserves to be stated plainly. A coupling efficiency that sounds excellent in isolation becomes a serious limitation once it is raised to the power of the sequence length. Length is not a secondary consideration. It is the primary one. And the impurities left behind are not inert bystanders. A deletion sequence is still a peptide, similar in mass to the target, and it will co-elute with the target unless the purification is genuinely good. Removing it is a real engineering problem with real costs — which is exactly why pretending otherwise is how suppliers end up publishing numbers they cannot support.

A supplier claiming 99% or better on everything, across the board, without qualification, is either using a definition of purity that nobody else would recognise, or is not being straight with you. It is easier to give two numbers and explain the difference than to give one number and hope nobody asks.

We know that publishing a second figure makes our headline number look slightly worse than a competitor's. We have made our peace with that. We would rather work with researchers who read the second number and immediately ask why it is there.

Batch-Level Testing

Every batch is tested. Not every product line — every batch.

This distinction gets blurred constantly in our sector, and the blur is not accidental. A supplier can test one batch of a compound, obtain a good result, and then reuse that same certificate for every subsequent batch of that compound for the next two years. Technically, they tested it. In practice, the document tells you almost nothing about the vial in your hand.

A certificate of analysis that cannot be traced to the material you actually received is meaningless. Anything less than traceability is decoration.

Independent Third-Party Verification

Our batches are tested and certified by independent third-party laboratories. The important word in that sentence is independent.

In-house testing is not worthless. We run our own tests, and they catch problems early. But there is a structural conflict at the centre of in-house testing: the party being tested is also the party doing the testing. Saying so is not an accusation. It is simply how incentives work, and a quality system that does not account for it is not really a quality system.

The dangerous thing about this conflict is that nobody has to lie for it to cause harm. It works through a hundred small, defensible decisions. A borderline peak — not a clear failure, but not clean either — gets the benefit of the doubt. A retest gets ordered when the first result is poor, but not when it is good. An odd reading gets attributed to the instrument, because the instrument has been behaving strangely, and that is a perfectly reasonable thing to say. None of those steps is fraud. Together they amount to a slow, invisible erosion of the foundation, and everyone involved would pass a lie detector test.

Because our batch testing is carried out by a third-party laboratory, the people doing it have no commercial stake in the outcome. The analyst runs the analysis and reports the result. If a batch does not meet specification, it does not meet specification. That result is final, and we cannot quietly overturn it. That is the entire point of the arrangement. It costs us something, and its value lies precisely in the fact that it is inconvenient for us.

Testing typically means purity by analytical HPLC together with identity confirmation by mass spectrometry — confirming that the peptide really is the sequence it is supposed to be, and not simply a very pure sample of something else. Purity without identity is just a number. A vial can be 99.8% pure and still contain a compound you were not asking for, and a purity assay on its own will happily describe that vial as excellent. The two tests answer different questions, and a supplier running only one of them is answering only half of yours.

If the paperwork cannot be matched to the vial, the paperwork is not evidence. It is a formality. The certificate carries a batch number, and that number matches the number printed on the label of the vial you receive. That is what turns a document into evidence — and it is also why, if something ever looks wrong, we would like to hear about it from you before anyone else does.

Stability, Storage and Handling

Purity at the point of manufacture is not the same thing as purity at the point of use. A supplier who talks about one while ignoring the other is telling half the story.

Peptides degrade. They are sensitive to temperature, moisture, light and freeze-thaw cycles. A peptide that leaves a facility at 99.4% and then sits on a warm shelf for two weeks is no longer the substance described on its certificate. The certificate has not been falsified. This is the least discussed failure mode, and it does the quietest damage, because it is invisible. A degraded vial does not announce itself. It looks correct. It is labelled correctly. And it will return a result that is slightly, inexplicably wrong, while the researcher spends three weeks hunting for a flaw in their own technique.

So we treat storage and cold-chain integrity as part of the quality system rather than as a shipping detail. Storage conditions are defined for lyophilised material. Our support team can read a certificate of analysis. That is a low bar, and a surprising number of suppliers fail to clear it. Anyone answering a question about a chromatogram, or about how a purity figure was arrived at, should not be reading from a script. This is not a point of pride. It is a practical requirement, because only a technically literate support function can recognise when something has genuinely gone wrong.
