Pharma Lab only sells lyophilized peptides. Lyophilization, commonly known as freeze-drying, is the gold standard used by the industry for storing and transporting peptides in a stable form. As the mixture passes through the column, different components in it interact with the material of the column at different rates, and this allows them to separate. This generates a chromatogram that visualises the composition of the sample, including the target peptide and any unwanted impurities. Through HPLC purification, background byproducts, truncated sequences and other contaminants that are inevitable in any type of synthesis are removed by simply collecting only those fractions corresponding to the target peptide.
In the second stage, mass spectrometry analysis is performed. HPLC tells us how pure the sample is, but mass spectrometry tells us what the sample actually is. This is achieved with a technique which determines the peptide's molecular weight by ionising the sample and analysing the ratio of ion mass to charge. The result is a mass spectrum, which is essentially a molecular fingerprint of the peptide, compared to the theoretical molecular weight. If the spectrum matches, the peptide has the accurate structure. If it does not, the batch is rejected. There is no grey area here.
The breadth of our testing is also where our approach differs from so many competitors. We do not test a random sampling from a production run and assume the results will extend to the rest of that batch. We test every batch individually. This is important because peptide synthesis is nonuniform by nature. The overall process may still be well controlled, but subtle differences in conditions — brief temperature variations, small amounts of additional reagents added at different times or concentrations — can induce differences between batches. Testing each batch separately helps us catch discrepancies that a sampling method would miss entirely.
For the majority of peptides, our standard purity threshold is 99%.
