Draw a Mountain Lion Face: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners
Mountain lions, also known as cougars, are majestic creatures that have captivated humans for centuries. With their powerful bodies and striking faces, they make fascinating subjects for artists of all skill levels. In this easy-to-follow guide, we'll show you how to draw a mountain lion face using simple shapes and basic drawing techniques.
Gather Your Materials
Before you start, make sure you have the following materials:
- A pencil (HB or 2B works best for beginners)
- Eraser
- Drawing paper or sketchbook
- Optional: colored pencils or markers for adding color
Understand the Basic Shapes
Like all animals, a mountain lion's face can be broken down into simple shapes. By understanding these basic shapes, you can create a more accurate and lifelike drawing. The mountain lion's face is composed of:

- An oval for the head
- Two almond shapes for the eyes
- An inverted triangle for the nose
- Two half-ovals for the ears
Sketch the Basic Shapes
Using light, barely-visible lines, sketch the basic shapes of the mountain lion's face onto your paper. Don't worry about making it perfect at this stage – the goal is to establish the overall composition and proportions.
Start with the head, drawing a large oval. Then, add the eyes, nose, and ears using the shapes mentioned earlier. The eyes should be placed about one-third of the way down the head, with the nose directly below them. The ears should be positioned at the top of the head, slightly above the eyes.
Refine the Shapes
Now that you have the basic shapes down, it's time to refine them and add some details. Using your pencil, darken the lines of the shapes and start to add some basic features:

- Draw the mountain lion's whiskers, which are short and pointy, coming out from the sides of the nose.
- Add the lips, which are thin and barely visible, running along the bottom of the nose and mouth.
- Sketch the mountain lion's powerful jawline, which is prominent and angular.
Add Fur and Texture
Mountain lions have short, tawny fur that gives their faces a distinctive texture. To capture this, use light, short strokes to add fur in the following areas:
- Around the eyes, using short, curved strokes to create the illusion of fur.
- On the cheeks and jawline, using longer, more prominent strokes to show the direction of the fur.
- On the forehead and top of the head, using short, scattered strokes to create a more uniform appearance.
Add the Final Details
With the basic structure and fur in place, it's time to add the final details that will bring your mountain lion face to life:
- Draw the mountain lion's pupils, which are small and almond-shaped. Leave the rest of the eyes white to show reflection.
- Add the mountain lion's nose, which is black and slightly upturned. Use light, circular strokes to show the texture of the nose.
- Draw the mountain lion's mouth, which is small and barely visible. Use a few short, curved lines to show the lips.
Optional: Add Color
If you'd like to add color to your mountain lion face, use colored pencils or markers to fill in the different areas. Remember to start with light layers and build up gradually to avoid over-saturating the colors.

Mountain lions have a tawny, orange-brown coat with lighter underparts and a lighter, cream-colored chest. Their faces often have a more reddish hue, with darker markings around the eyes and nose. Don't be afraid to experiment with different shades and hues to create a unique and dynamic drawing.
Practice and Refine
Drawing is a skill that improves with practice, so don't be discouraged if your first few attempts don't turn out exactly as you hoped. Keep practicing, and with each drawing, you'll notice your skills improving.
Try drawing mountain lion faces from different angles, or experiment with adding backgrounds and other elements to create a more complete scene. With time and practice, you'll be able to capture the essence of these magnificent creatures in your drawings.
