Center the shelf (1x4 board) on top of the shelf supports. Secure it using 1-1/4" wood screws from the bottom, ensuring the screws do not protrude through the top surface.
Sand and Finish
Begin by sanding the end table with 120-grit sandpaper, following the grain of the wood. Remove any dust with a tack cloth or damp rag. For a smooth finish, sand again with 220-grit sandpaper.
Now, apply your chosen stain or paint, following the manufacturer's instructions. Allow it to dry completely. Finally, apply a protective finish such as polyurethane or varnish to seal and preserve your end table.
