According to a source who spoke to IRM News, Wadad Babiker was arrested by the Empowerment and Anti-corruption committee at her home in Khartoum to pave way for investigations in corruption charges.

The authorities arrested Babiker last December, on charges of financial corruption and abuse of the Sanad charitable organization, which is owned by her, as well as possession of residential lands, real estate and bank accounts.

The defense committee for Widad had appealed to the authorities for her release to receive treatment after her health condition deteriorated in prison and she was transferred to hospital for treatment.

According to the source, the wife of the ousted Sudanese leader is currently in a critical health condition suffering from chronic diseases.

The authorities have refused repeated requests from Babiker’s lawyers and members of her inner circle to allow her leave the country for medical treatment.

Hajja Fadl Corondese, the Spokesperson of the Sudanese Professionals Association had disclosed at the time that the investigation of Al-Bashir’s wife came late, explaining that “Widad’s record is full of corruption, so why investigate only now? I think there is truce being held from some side.”
