Denay calls on the government to pay more attention to flood-devastated Jonglei state
Oct 29, 2020(Nyamilepedia) — Jonglei state governor, Hon. Denay Jock Changor met with President Salva Kiir Mayardit in his office where he briefed on the general situation of his state including the floods, the status of the State of emergency that was declared in August 2020 and the security situation.
According to the presidential press statement, Jonglei governor said that the president is concerned about the people affected by the floods.
“Hon. Denay Jock Chagor said, H.E, President Salva Kiir Mayardit is concerned about the situation of the people affected by floods and has urged the relevant institutions to provide support and humanitarian assistance to the affected population,” read the statement.
Jonglei state is one of the states where floods continue to displace thousands of households which worsened in August when the river Nile dykes broke.
Mabior Atem Mabior, Jonglei State General Secretary at the time explained how the floods had affected the residents of the area. He worried that children, women and the elderly had been exposed to health hazards as they slept on bare ground with limited access to clean water and mosquito nets.
“Flash-floods have severely affected the local population here. It’s a horrible situation to explain. It became worse when the dyke was broken. Waters washed into buildings across the State capital and as I speak, things are getting worse,” he said.
While addressing the press after his meeting with the president, the governor said that most of the areas in Jonglei State are affected by the floods and has urged the Government to pay more attention to vulnerable people.
Hon. Denay Jock Chagor also said that the people of Jonglei State are calling for the formation of the State local government as soon as possible to help in the running of the State’s affairs and H.E, President Salva Kiir is optimistic that the State Governments shall be fully Reconstituted very soon.
