Fighting begun during the Christmas eve between SPLA-IO forces allied to First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny and his former army chief Gen. Gatwech Dual who broke away from the group in August last year.
General Gatwech’s forces had yesterday gave a 24-hour ultimatum to the Machar-allied forces to surrender themselves after they reportedly evacuated their bases following fierce fighting which has allegedly claimed the lives of five (5) opposition commanders allied to Machar.
In a statement this evening, Brig. Gen. William Gatjiath Deng, the spokesman of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO) Kitgwang faction, said Machar’s forces who he said are approximately 300 in number, have surrendered to a Sudanese army base along the Sudanese border with five commanders.
“The office of information for Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition, SPLA (IO), would once again inform the general public that, the forces under command of Lt/Gen James Yak Dayiem who relatively launched (9) series attacks on Magenis since Aug 7th, to Dec 31st, have finally disarmed by the Sudan Army Forces (SAF) today this morning,” Gatjiath said in a statement extended to Sudans Post.
“This was happen after they had refused to hand over their logistics (vehicles and weapons) to South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) at Masakbel military barrack on the Dec 31st. Therefore, the (FVP) and his acting Chief of Staff, Lt/Gen. Gabriel Duop Lam, had ordered their forces to evacuate Masakbel, back to the Sudan border and hand over their logistics to Sudan yesterday evening, but Nobody knows what is behind the plan,” he added.
He said the forces who are led by SPLA-IO sector one commander Lt. Gen. Yak Dayiem surrendered to the Sudanese army and then “queued for demilitarization at Homjalala Military Barrack this morning and have given (7) days to stay at the barrack until the further notice.”
Other opposition commanders who surrendered to the Sudanese army along with Gen. Yak include, Gen. Parjiek Toang, Gen. James Diang Latjor, Gen. Malual Biel Dak, Gen. Kuony Mut, Gen. Nuay Deng, and their intelligence chief Colonel Mut Tap.
