The violence erupted over a contested ox.
Lakes State Police Spokesman Maj. Elijah Mabor Makuac described the motive as “the issue of an ox bull identified by colour as Makur.”
“The case of this bull ‘Makur’ was actually long time ago when some youth from Panyar section in 2013 decided to raid this bull and they sold this bull to people of Tonj,” he told Sudans Post on phone from Rumbek.
“The case was opened, and it was settled according to the court and the raiders were told to pay back the bull and the same time, the bulls have the same colour,” he added.
The recent violence broke out after the Panyar section attempted to forcibly retake a bull which had been given to the Waat section as compensation.
Five members of the Waat section and three members of the Panyar section were killed.
Makuac said the security situation is now calm, with government forces deployed to the area. An investigation is underway, but no arrests have yet been made.
