Activist warns of potential rights abuse during planned disarmament in Unity State

JUBA, NOV. 5, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – South Sudan activist Elijah Luk has expressed concerns about the potential for human rights abuses during the planned disarmament campaign in Unity State, urging the government to prioritize the safety and security of all citizens.

In a statement released today, Luk highlighted the country’s history of violence between security forces and civilians during previous disarmament efforts.

He emphasized the need for a comprehensive and well-coordinated approach to disarmament that upholds human rights principles.

“The government must ensure that the disarmament process is carried out in a transparent and accountable manner,” Luk stated. “There must be clear guidelines and procedures in place to prevent abuses of power and to protect the rights of civilians.”

Luk specifically cautioned against the selective targeting of certain regions, such as Upper Nile, for disarmament, as this could exacerbate tensions and jeopardize the revitalized peace process.

He instead advocated for a nationwide approach that adheres to the provisions of the National Arms Act.

“The National Arms Act provides a solid framework for regulating and controlling the possession and use of arms in South Sudan,” Luk explained. “By effectively implementing this act, the government can establish a comprehensive disarmament strategy that ensures the safety and security of all citizens.”

Luk also called for increased engagement with local communities and armed groups to build trust and address their concerns.

He emphasized the importance of international cooperation, particularly with the United Nations and regional organizations, to provide technical and financial support for the disarmament project.

“Achieving lasting peace and stability in South Sudan requires a well-planned and inclusive disarmament process that prioritizes human rights,” Luk concluded. “By working together, the government, local communities, and international partners can create a safer and more secure future for all South Sudanese.”
