BOR — At least 4 people were killed in a road ambush in the Malual-Gaam area of Twic East County in South Sudan’s Jonglei State, a local official said.

The passenger vehicle, which was carrying 13 people and traveling from Bor town to Twic East County, was targeted in an attack on Saturday morning at 6:45 AM.

Juach Arok Juach, commissioner of Twic East County, reported that unknown gunmen opened fire on a commercial vehicle traveling to Twic East County on Saturday morning, resulting in the immediate fatalities of 4 passengers.

“It was yesterday, 7th June, at around 6:45 AM when a passenger vehicle coming from Bor Town crossed to a place called Malual-Gaam, where the attackers shot at the driver and three others. Unfortunately, four people passed on, including the driver,” Arok told Sudans Post on Saturday.

Arok said the area has experienced sporadic violence and cattle raiding in recent years.

Arok said the motive behind the ambush is not yet clear.

“So far, we have not found out who did that act; usually that point is always having such issues. Most of the incidents happen in that place because it is a bit far from the resident and the cattle camp.”

The identities of the attackers remain unknown, and authorities have initiated an investigation.

“The emergency services and local security forces were dispatched to the scene, though the remote nature of the area can often hinder rapid response.”

This latest incident adds to a troubling pattern of insecurity in Twic East County and the wider Jonglei State.

Just days ago, reports emerged of deadly clashes over disputed fishing grounds in the Twice East County, leaving 14 dead and dozens injured.
