AWEIL – The Director of Youth and Sports in Aweil East County of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State was reportedly taken to an unknown location over the weekend by individuals believed to be security operatives.

According to a source who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal, Bulis Bol Chan was arrested at around 8:00 p.m. in Wanyjok town, allegedly by security personnel acting under the orders of Aweil East County Commissioner Garang Thiang.

The source said Chan was taken from the middle of the market at night, leaving his motorbike behind.

“Bulis Bol Chan was taken to an unknown place. It has now been about three days, and people are still unaware of his whereabouts,” the source said.

Preliminary information suggests that Chan’s arrest may be linked to a social media post in which he allegedly criticized the county commissioner and called for his removal.

According to the source, Chan reportedly wrote on his timeline that the suspension of the Aweil North County commissioner should also be followed by the removal of the Aweil East commissioner.

“Chan was seen posting on his timeline calling for the removal of Garang Thiang. After the suspension of the Aweil North commissioner, he said it was now the turn for the Aweil East commissioner to be removed as well,” the source added.

The source further claimed that information circulating locally suggests that Chan may currently be detained at National Security premises in Aweil Town, although his exact condition and legal status remain unclear.

“It is being learned that he is being held in Aweil Town, but no one has clear information except that he posted criticism against the commissioner of Aweil East County,” the source said.

The reported arrest comes amid growing tensions between local authorities and youth groups in the county.

Last year, a dispute emerged between the county commissioner and the Aweil East youth chairperson, who also serves as an enumerator with the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (RRC). The disagreement reportedly stemmed from allegations of misuse of humanitarian aid intended for local residents. The youth leader was later arrested after the matter was reported to the commissioner.

Community members say the tensions reflect broader frustrations among some youth over their participation in public affairs and governance in the county.

Local authorities have not yet publicly commented on the reported detention.
