BOR – Local authorities in Bor County in South Sudan’s Jonglei State have officially launched an internal road renovation project aimed at improving accessibility and easing movement within the county.

The initiative, inaugurated on Friday in Bor town, is designed to rehabilitate key road networks that have long been a source of concern for residents due to their poor state.

The project marks one of the most significant infrastructure efforts in recent years, targeting roads that are vital for trade, transport, and daily life.

Bor County Commissioner Samuel Ateny Pech said the renovation works will begin with the Langbaar area, which has been particularly affected by deteriorating road conditions.

The first phase will focus on three major stretches: the road from Karaba Roundabout to Langbaar Junction, the road linking Akuot Ayol to Tibek, and the stretch from NRC Junction to Radio Jonglei.

“I am responding to the urgent call by the people of Bor about the bad roads that have made life difficult for our residents,” Commissioner Ateny said during the launch. He emphasised that the project’s success depends on cooperation among stakeholders.

“I urge the Bor Municipal Council and residents to work hand in hand with the county government to ensure the timely and successful completion of these renovation efforts. This project is a commitment to improving infrastructure that is vital for the social and economic well-being of our community.”

The poor condition of Bor’s internal roads has been a long-standing challenge, particularly during the rainy season, when flooding and mud often make roads impassable.

This has disrupted transport, slowed trade, and complicated access to essential services. Residents have consistently raised concerns about the state of roads, describing them as a major obstacle to development.

Authorities believe the renovation project will significantly ease these challenges. By improving its internal road networks, the county aims to enhance social interaction, promote business, and stimulate broader economic growth.

The commissioner assured residents that the county government is committed to sustaining infrastructure development as a priority.
