JUBA – The Bor Municipal Council in South Sudan’s Jonglei State have banned hotels and restaurants from slaughtering goats and cows at their premises.

Jacob Achiek Machar, Mayor of Bor municipality, said the order aimed to curb criminal activities and ensure public health in Bor town.

“The Bor Municipal Council has issued a provisional order banning the slaughter of cows and goats within hotels and restaurants across the municipality,” said Achiek.

Mayor Achiek stated that the measure is enacted under the powers conferred by Section 57, read in conjunction with Section 40 of the Local Government Act 2009.

“The primary objective of this order is multifaceted to reduce criminal activities related to animal theft, to discourage the slaughter of infected animals, and to minimise the chances of consumption of contaminated meat within the Bor Municipal Council,” said Achiek.

He called on all the law enforcement agents to implement the order to ensure the citizens are safe in the town.

“Anyone who violates this order shall be dealt with legally before the competent court in the Bor Municipal Council,” said Achiek.

“The only site that is fit for slaughtering of cows and goats is the slaughterhouse at the riverside,” he added.

He said the designated and approved location for such activities is to facilitate better oversight and adherence to hygiene standards in Bor town.

The directive by the mayor is expected to have a notable impact on the operations of hotels and restaurants in Bor, requiring them to source their meat from the designated slaughterhouse.

The move signals a proactive approach by the Bor Municipal Council to address issues of public safety and health within its jurisdiction.
