Juba — Police authorities in South Sudan’s Jonglei State on Tuesday urged residents of Bor to adopt a community policing system to ensure that peace, tranquility, and security are upheld in the state.

1st Lt. James Akech Mapiou, the Jonglei State Police Spokesman, told Sudans Post on Tuesday that community policing is essential for enhancing security and building a stronger relationship between the police and the community.

“We are calling on all residents of Jonglei State to become active partners in ensuring their own safety and the security of their communities,” Akech said.

Akech urged the community to join hands with police in maintaining law and order.

“Community policing is not just the responsibility of the police force; it requires the active involvement of every citizen. By working together, we can create a more secure and peaceful environment for everyone.”

Akech explained that community policing involves a range of activities beyond reporting crimes.

“You know your neighbors; you understand the patterns of activity in your areas. By sharing this information with the police, you can help us to prevent crime before it happens and to respond more effectively when incidents do occur.”

He underscored the need for the residents to share information with the police to help in curbing the crimes, as well as engaging in open dialogue to identify and address local security concerns.

“The communities in Jonglei state capital Bor should always work together by rescuing each other. Whenever your neighbor has been attacked, you should be in a position to help him if you can or immediately call for police,” he said.

He stressed the need to boost relations and collaboration with the community, saying it would foster mutual trust and understanding to boost law enforcement activities.

“When there is a strong bond between the police and the community, it builds confidence and encourages people to come forward with information without fear,” he said.
