JUBA – South Sudan’s First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny has named a woman for the position of deputy minister of interior one year after initial nominee, Mabior Garang De Mabior, resigned shortly after accepting the position.

South Sudan parties to the revitalized peace agreement divided up ministerial positions in March 2020 leading to the formation of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGONU) and Machar had appointed 9 ministers along with some deputy ministers including Mabior Garang De Mabior as deputy minister of interior.

Mabior however in June 2020 resigned from the position saying the former ITGONU led by President Salva Kiir Mayardit was not interested in the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement and as such cannot participate in the government which he said will not do anything in the pace of the Kiir intransigence on certain provisions of the agreement such as the security arrangements.

He since went into exile and has joined a list of increasingly hostile opposition politicians against Machar who have criticized the First Vice President for his return to Juba without a proper security arrangements provided for in the revitalized peace agreement.

Speaking to Sudans Post in an interview this evening, Acting Press Secretary in the Office of the First Vice President and SPLM-IO Director of Information and Public Relations Puok Both Baluang said Machar named a nominee for the position seven months ago and they are waiting for the president to make appointment.

“This is to announce that the SPLM/SPLA (IO) under the leadership of H.E the First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny has nominated a person for the position of the deputy minister of interior which has been vacant since June last year,”  Baluang said from Juba.

He said the SPLM-IO had met and decided to allocate the position to one of the administrative areas with condition that the nominee is a woman so that it completes the 35% woman quota provided for in the revitalized peace agreement and as such a woman from Abyei was named, but refused to give her name.

“The SPLM-IO has decided that the nominee for the position comes from an administrative area and be a woman and this should Abyei and that’s why a woman politician from Abyei has been nominated and we are waiting for his appointment from the President,” he added.

The senior opposition official further said the nomination for the deputy minister of interior was made seven months ago along with that of General Simon Gatwech Dual and despite the delayed appointed; President Salva Kiir has not informed the SPLM-IO that he has rejected the nominee.

“What I can say is that the nominee has not been rejected by the president and after the formation of the Reconstituted Transitional National Legislative Assembly and the Council of States, we ought to take this momentum to call on the president to appoint the nominee so that we complete the appointment of the executive of the revitalized unity government,” he said.
