Gogrial – An elderly man identified as Ater Akol sustained severe injuries following an airstrike in Awutwut village, Gogrial East county, on Thursday.
According to a local resident who declined to be named, the victim suffered compound fractures in both legs and is in critical condition.
Eyewitnesses report that the airstrike occurred after cattle raiders from Unity State attacked the village, targeting livestock.
In response, the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) deployed a military aircraft to address the situation. However, it remains unclear why the airstrike targeted the village itself, rather than solely pursuing the raiders.
Local authorities have yet to provide an official statement on the incident, leaving residents seeking answers about the military’s actions.
The attack has raised concerns about civilian safety during operations aimed at curbing cattle rustling, a persistent issue in the region.
