NORTH KORDOFAN – At least 16 civilians were killed and eight others injured in a violent assault carried out by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the village of Markaz Al-Ziyadiya in North Kordofan, according to the Sudanese Doctors’ network.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the network confirmed that the attack occurred on the evening of August 7 and described the assault as a “full-fledged war crime.” The group added that six people remain missing in the aftermath of the attack. Among the victims was a child whose body was discovered burned inside their home.
Describing the scene as “tragic,” the network said the incident violated “the most basic human, moral, and religious values.” it strongly condemned the attack and accused the RSF of pursuing a consistent pattern of violence against unarmed civilians across the country.
“This is a war crime and a systematic practice by the RSF against defenseless civilians in Sudan,” the statement read. The network expressed frustration at what it called “astonishing local and international disregard” for the ongoing atrocities.
The group called on the international community and human rights organizations to fulfill their legal and humanitarian responsibilities. It also demanded the urgent establishment of safe corridors to allow humanitarian aid to reach civilians trapped in areas under RSF control.
The attack on Markaz Al-Ziyadiya comes amid a dangerous escalation in violence across both Kordofan and Darfur regions. Fighting between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) has intensified in recent weeks, especially in towns and villages where thousands of displaced people have sought refuge.
Residents in affected areas face severe shortages of food, medicine, and clean drinking water. The health crisis has been compounded by the spread of cholera, particularly in overcrowded displacement camps.
In North Darfur’s capital, El Fasher, civilians have now spent more than a year under RSF siege. Humanitarian agencies have been largely unable to deliver supplies, and medical services are near collapse. The siege has now entered its second year with no signs of relief.
The RSF, led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo “Hemedti”, stands accused of committing widespread atrocities since the start of the conflict. Reports from human rights groups have documented killings, looting, mass displacement, sexual violence, and the destruction of civilian infrastructure.
As the war in Sudan grinds on, civilians continue to suffer devastating consequences. The attack on Markaz Al-Ziyadiya is yet another example of the unchecked brutality being inflicted across the country while global responses remain minimal and ineffective.
