BOR – The Business Community of Greater Bahr el Ghazal residing in Bor town, the capital of Jonglei State of South Sudan, on Tuesday demanded protection amid an escalating crime rate.
John Deng Madit, Chairperson of the Business Community of Greater Bahr El Ghazal, told Sudans Post on Tuesday that some armed youth carrying machetes and pangas attacked several traders on Friday in the Pan-liet neighborhood of Bor Town, resulting in injuries to 11 individuals.
“They took 34 million SSP and 7,000 USD. Phones. 5 people are critically injured, and this is something that perplexed us, and this is a trend that is dangerous to us from Bahr El Ghazal as a community,” Deng said.
Deng stated that 5 individuals in critical condition are receiving medical care at Bor State Hospital.
He said that the motive for the attack remains unclear, noting that the attacker stole valuable items, including 34 million SSP, $7,000, and phones.
“The motive behind targeting us remains unknown. They took with them money and phones; the government needs to work on this to bring the suspects to book.”
Deng disclosed that they have informed the authorities, who promised to recover their stolen items.
“We are now residing in the premises of the governor in Bor Town, and we are seeking for justice to prevail,” Deng said.
He stated that one of the robbers has been arrested, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the others who are still at large.
A source affiliated with the government in Bor confirmed the incident but stated that the government is actively working to capture the suspects.
The official linked the increase in crime to a lack of job opportunities for young people.
He noted that a similar attack occurred last year, but the attackers were apprehended and dealt with according to the law.
