GOGRIAL – At least 11 people were killed when armed men attacked a cattle camp in Gogrial East County of Warrap State on Sunday, a local official said.

The county commissioner, Maluach Lueth said the attack occurred in Awoyic village with several heads of grazing cattle were driven towards Mayom County.

“The men attacked the village on Sunday and made away with hundred heads of cattle. Some of those people had uniforms and others were without uniform. They took the cattle and when pursued, they were heading towards Mayom County,” said Lueth.

“The forces of SSPDF [South Sudan Peoples Defense Force] and the police ran after them, but could not recover the cattle. Only dead bodies were lying down as the youth attempted to recover the cows, but all in vain,” he added.

Sudans Post was unable to reach the Mayom County commissioner for a comment.

Cattle raids and killings in parts of South Sudan present a major challenge to the government. In recent years, attempts to disarm civilians have been unsuccessful.
