BENTIU – Local government authorities in Mayom County of South Sudan’s Unity State have returned at least 168 head of cattle to their owners in Gogrial West County of Warrap State.

The cattle were seized in raids carried out between March 16 and March 27, 2024, by suspected criminals from Mayom County and Ajak Kuac Payam of Twic County.

Speaking to Sudans Post yesterday, Mayom County Commissioner Luke Chierye confirmed the return of the cattle, stating that three individuals have been arrested for the raids.

“We have arrested three criminals from our side who went to Gogrial West County for the aim to raid, resulting in theft of nearly 170 cattle, 168 to be exact,” he said.

“After we arrested them, the security personnel investigated the three criminals, and they told the security personnel the whereabouts of the cows. The cattle were later brought to the county headquarters here in Mayom,” he said.

He emphasized that those responsible will face legal consequences and praised cooperation between the two counties in resolving the issue.

“I am so happy to the Gogrial West authorities for coordinating security affairs. Whenever there is any insecurity between Mayom county and Gogrial West County, we coordinate it and take actions against those criminals,” he said.

Chierye further urged Gogrial West authorities to reciprocate by returning any cattle stolen from Mayom County in the past.

Gogrial West Commissioner Maluach Lueth Luach confirmed the receipt of the cattle and expressed appreciation for Mayom County’s actions. While acknowledging remaining missing cattle, he clarified that no individuals from Ajak Kuac were involved in the raids.

“Yes yesterday, I coordinated with the commissioner of Mayom County, and he told me that the cattle were on their way coming to Gogrial West area. The cattle have been handed over officially to us today this morning by authorities of Mayom county, and we appreciate that spirits,” he said.

“Even if there is a bigger number of cattle that has not been returned by the authorities in Mayom county, they will still collect it and send it to us and then to the rightful owners here in Gogrial West County,” he concluded.
