Speaking at a CTSAMVM Board Meeting in Juba, Major-General Yitayal Gelaw Bitew, the CTSAMVM chairperson, warned that the NUF’s role in the upcoming elections remains uncertain due to the limited progress.
“The participation of the NUF during the anticipated general elections is questionable. Deployment is slow, the deployment of other organized forces is unclear, and the commencement of Phase Two training remains uncertain,” he said.
“Cantonment Sites and Training Centers Commanders continue to report severe logistical supply shortages,” he added.
Bitew acknowledged the deployment of two additional NUF Battalions, bringing the total to eight military battalions deployed.
However, he emphasized that other organized forces trained in Phase One haven’t been deployed.
The CTSAMVM Chairman also raised concerns over reports of recruitment by the rebel National Salvation Front (NAS) and recent attacks in Central Equatoria State.
“CTSAMVM has received information on an increase in attacks by unknown armed groups against civilians. An attack recently occurred in Western Equatoria State involving the Ezo County Paramount Chief,” he said.
Bitew expressed particular concern regarding NAS activity in Lainya County, warning it could derail the peace process.
“CTSAMVM has noted a rise in suspected NAS activity around Yei County, where reports indicate they are recruiting youths,” Bitew said.
“Additionally, suspected NAS elements ambushed a commercial vehicle in Lainya County, killing the driver and injuring an SSPDF soldier escorting it. These incidents threaten the implementation of the ongoing peace process,” he added.
