In a statement on Friday evening, the presidency said Kiir signed into law the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Optional Protocol, International Convention on Civil and Political Rights, Protocol on the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (Maputo Protocol).
In a statement, CEPO congratulated the president “for this historical and remarkable act of signing the UN Conventions and treaties including African Union Maputo Protocol.”
Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director of Community Empowerment for Progress Organization, who has been calling for signing of these treaties into law by the president described the signing as a landmark success of CEPO’s advocacy.
“The signing of the three International Human Rights Conventions and Africa Union Maputo Protocol is success of our advocacy and lobby. This is clear demonstration of political commitment for respect of human rights by the political leadership in South Sudan> CEPO thanks Light for the World for supporting our influential advocacy and congratulates Right Honorable Speaker for the effective cooperation,” he said.
“CEPO in partnership with South Sudan Union of Persons with Disabilities and Light for the World will work closely with the National Ministry of Gender and Social Welfare for the development of action plan for the implementation of Maputo Protocol and UN convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities,” he stressed.
The civil society watchdog further congratulated President Salva Kiir Mayardit “for making South Sudan party to the UN Conventions on Human Rights and Africa Union Maputo protocol.”
“This signing of the UN conventions and African Union Protocol (Maputo Protocol ) is a great results to our human rights engage in the implementation of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Recommendations and conclusions foe the government of South Sudan,” Yakani added.
