JUBA – South Sudan’s civil society organization, the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), has appealed to partners to support media organizations in South Sudan and vowed to engage the media to provide enough coverage on escalating floods in the world’s youngest country.

This comes after floods displaced at least 50,000 people in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State with important government and community infrastructure being submerged by water largely in rural areas of the state as well as in Gogrial East County of Warrap state.

In a statement extended to Sudans Post, the CEPO said that there was need for partners to support media organizations in order to give special coverage to the floods to attract the attention of leaders in Juba who the CEPO wants to intervene immediately.

“CEPO calls for special media support for provision of visibility for the negative implications and community resilience in the face of the floods. CEPO will be engaging the media for proper coverage of the flood implications and communities’ resilience,” the statement signed by CEPO’s Executive Director Edmund Yakani reads in part.

“CEPO appreciates the recent field visits of the national ministry of humanitarian affords and disaster management to Some parts of Warrap and northern Bahr el ghazal states. It is essential for the president to have national address over the growing threats to our communities faced with the current floods,” he added.

The statement further said that the civil society organization “will be championing enactment of National Solidarity Act on Floods Response (NSAFR) as a national approach for mitigating the floods threats on our communities across the country.”
