The meeting, held on July 3rd at the Trust Guest House in Torit, focused on ensuring responsible mining practices, promoting transparency, and achieving sustainable development, according to CSCNR Coordinator Mr. Koma Vens.
“The discussions will focus on key aspects of the legal framework governing the mining sector in South Sudan and the imperative of prudent fiscal governance for sustainable development,” Vens said.
Eastern Equatoria State is known for its rich mineral resources, including gold, copper, and iron ore. However, the sector faces challenges such as lack of infrastructure, limited institutional capacity, and regulatory issues.
The meeting brought together members of parliament, traditional chiefs, civil society leaders, anti-corruption agencies, youth groups, and women’s organizations.
Opening the forum, Mr. Charles Lokwaruk, Chair of the Civil Society Network in Eastern Equatoria State, emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability.
“Your presence here underscores the importance we collectively place on ensuring transparency, accountability, and sustainable development in South Sudan’s mining sector,” Lokwaruk said.
The Deputy Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly, Rt. Hon. Betty Hope Awor, highlighted the need for responsible mining practices to contribute to economic development.
“The deliberations today will undoubtedly contribute to shaping policies that promote transparency and equitable distribution of benefits from our natural resources,” Awor said.
The meeting participants developed recommendations to address challenges in the mining sector. This include organizing multi-stakeholder dialogues involving the national government, local authorities, mining companies, and civil society and fostering collaboration between government agencies, civil society, and communities to strengthen oversight mechanisms.
They also recommended implementing capacity-building initiatives for regulatory bodies and Prioritizing community engagement through participatory decision-making and benefit-sharing mechanisms.
The CSCNR emphasized the need for continued dialogue and collaboration to ensure the mining sector benefits all South Sudanese.
