JUBA — At least seven people have been killed and four injured in communal violence in South Sudan’s Tonj East County of Warrap State, a local official said on Thursday.

The Warrap State Ministry of Information said in a statement issued on Thursday that the violence that erupted on 27 May, 2025, at 6:00 am continued for three days, leaving 7 dead.

It said the violence, which took place on 27 May between two communities of Tonj East County, resulted in the killing of 1 person and injuries to 4 others.

It said on May 28, 2025, at around 9:00 am, the violence escalated, leading to a new violent confrontation from the morning until evening.

The motive behind the deadly attack remains unclear.

“The number of casualties was not established until the Tonj East County Commissioner confirmed this morning that 7 people were killed on both sides while fighting was still ongoing,” it said.

The state government strongly condemned the ongoing violence in Tonj East County and urged both parties to stop fighting immediately.

“In response to this incident, the government has taken immediate action to stop this senseless violence in Tonj East and other parts of Tonj.”

The state government deployed 1,500 soldiers from Division Eleven to Tonj East to help minimize the situation, it said.

“We have requested to send in 1,500 soldiers from Division Eleven to Tonj East to help minimize the situation. Additionally, we urge the national government to urgently deploy more forces to swiftly silence the current ongoing conflict in Tonj East.”

The state authorities urged both conflicting communities to embrace peaceful coexistence.

“I am appealing to both fighting communities to live peacefully and avoid further fights, riots, nights, and physical confrontations involving the firing of guns.”

“We also urge everyone to prioritize the safety and well-being of their communities and to allow the cultivation to begin peacefully,” it said.
