Continue with demolition, Central Equatoria governor orders new mayor

JUBA — South Sudan’s Central Equatoria State governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony has directed the newly appointed mayor of Juba City Council, Michael Lado Thomas Allah-Jabu to continue demolishing structures erected along the streets of Juba city. 

Anthony issued this directive during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed mayor on Wednesday at the state secretariat.

The authorities of the Juba town council have embarked on a crackdown on witchcraft and the demolition of structures wrongly erected along the streets of Juba Town.

“You should continue with opening up of the roads. I don’t want this program to stop. Let it continue and you also reorganize the markets. I am told there is a good plan, let it continue,” Anthony said.

Anthony urged the new mayor, Allah-Jabu to cooperate with state line ministries to avoid malpractice in demolition exercised.

“But very importantly you have to coordinate with line institutions like the ministry of housing and the ministry of Road in the reorganization of the roads. They know the dimension of the roads so that you don’t victimize people,” he said.

He directed Allah-Jabu to embark on a tree-planting campaign to combat the impact of climate change.  

“You plan trees. I have seen you people planting trees, let it continue because it is within the roadmap to plant a lot of trees, and once done with this, you have to manage the waste and I want you to start with the delusion of littering. The people are dumping waste in the river,” he said.

The governor waned members of the Juba City Council against taking actions that will affect the citizens.

“Let us know that when we take action, it has serious bearing to the city council as an institution and the state. Juba as I said is a national capital, is hosting an international community. Is a site where national institutions are based, our president is here and all vice presidents and the national parliament. International agencies operating in South Sudan, are all in Juba. So, all the actions that we take must meet international standards,” he said.
