CORRUPTION: Darfuri broker given $3 million by Kiir’s security advisor to buy apartment disappears with money

JUBA – A Sudanese trader from the restive region of Darfur has disappeared with at least $3 million given to him by South Sudan president’s security advisor, Tut Gatluak, supposedly to buy an apartment for his children in the Egyptian capital Cairo, two sources familiar with the matter told Sudans Post in Juba on Thursday.

One source who refused to be named said the money was sent to the unnamed Sudanese citizen’s bank account in September 2018, following the signing of the revitalized peace agreement in Addis Ababa and the brokered had since been telling Gatluak that he was furnishing the apartment until the South Sudan senior government official visited Cairo in March 2019 to find out that the guy was actually lying.

“Those money were given to the Darfuri businessman who said he was a broker. You know General Tut has a lot of businesses in Sudan since before the separation of South Sudan and he has a lot of money from his businesses,” the source who seriously refused to be named said.

“The agreement was reached in Juba in 2018. That was in September 2018 and the money which is $3 million was sent to one of his bank accounts to buy an apartment for family members including his (Tutkew) children and the man has been saying that he was furnishing the apartment but he was in fact lying,” the source added.

The source said: “When he (Tutkew) came to Cairo in March 2018, he refused to pick up the phone, however, a day later, he was called from a different number and when he spoke to General Tut, he closed the phone and never been reached again.”

Another source confirmed the story, but refused to comment, saying “he is not allowed to discuss personal affairs of the presidential advisor on national security with any kind of the media.”
