JUBA – Uganda’s U.S sanctioned General Abel Kandiho was not appointed as head of South Sudan peace monitoring mechanism, said the body’s media officer Margaret Lole.

Lole said general Kandiho was appointed by President Yoweri Museveni to serve as IGAD guarantors for Security Supervisory Mechanism in South Sudan.

“Ceasefire and Transitional Security Arrangement Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (CTSAMVM) would like to clarify that General Abel Kandiho from Uganda was not appointed as the country’s delegate to Ceasefire and Transitional Security Arrangement Monitoring and Verification Mechanism,” Lole said in statement emailed to Sudans Post yesterday.

Maj. General Abel Kandiho who head Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence since January 2017 was last week removed by President Yoweri Museveni weeks after he was sanctioned by the United States over human rights violations during last year’s Ugandan elections.

Gen. Kandiho who was replaced by Maj. General Jack Bakasumba was accused of allegedly working with dissident to kidnap Rwandese citizens in Uganda.

Maj. General Jack Bakasumba who served as Ugandan Chief of Joint is expected to be in Juba to take up the role of Security Supervisory Mechanism at IGAD in South Sudan.

“Instead, General Kandiho was appointed by President Yoweri Museveni to the IGAD guarantors Security Supervisory Mechanism. Gen. Kandiho is being replaced by Maj. General Jack Bakasumba who is expected to arrive in South Sudan to serve at IGAD Security Supervisory Mechanism,” Lole said.
