Deadly communal fighting breaks out in Tonj, nearly 30 killed – gov’t

According to the state government, the fighting broke out on Sunday between Luacjang, Thiik and Lou Paher communities, and was still ongoing today resulting in death and wounding of several people.

JUBA – Authorities in South Sudan’s Warrap state are saying that a new wave of communal fighting which begun on Sunday has resulted in the death of almost thirty (30) people and wounding of several others.

According to the state government, the fighting broke out on Sunday between Luacjang, Thiik and Lou Paher communities, and was still ongoing today resulting in death and wounding of several people.

“The government of Warrap state is hereby issuing this condemnation letter against another communal conflict which started yesterday the 15th of August 2021 and resumes today the 16th of the same month,” reads a statement from Warrap state ministry of information.

“The conflict between Luacjang and Thiik as well as Lou Paher left number of people dead and wounded,” he said, adding that those killed on both sides amounts to 27 and 29 wounded from both sides as well.

“Hence, the government of Warrap state under leadership of Hon. Aleu Ayieny Aleu condemns this senseless conflict in strongest term possible. It is sad news to learn this tragic incident which had claimed number of lives between conflicting parties,” the statement said.

It added that the statement government had held emergency meeting this afternoon and “resolved to investigate the matter as soon as possible.”
