Dr. Lam calls December 15 a day of shame over 2013 Juba killings  

JUBA – South Sudan prominent opposition leader and chairman of opposition National Democratic Movement (NDM), Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin, has said that the December 15, 2013 Juba killing, which sparked the seven-year-old conflict, is a day of shame.

On December 15, 2013, fighting between elements of the South Sudan army, then SPLA, resulted in the killing and ethnic targeting of Nuer civilians in Juba, sparking mutinies among senior army commanders bringing about what would become the ‘South Sudanese Civil War’.

In a tweet marking the December 2013 massacre, Dr. Lam said the day was shameful and shattered hopes following independence about freedom and human dignity the South Sudanese have fought for against Sudan for half a decade.

“Seven years ago this day, thousands of innocent citizens of this country were targeted in ethnic killings in our capital, Juba,” the prominent opposition and influential politician wrote in a tweet on December 15, 2020.

“It is a day of shame just over two years after we thought we have achieved our lofty slogans of freedom and human dignity,” he added.
