Ex-Nigerian president becomes head of Cavendish University

JUBA – Former Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan will this Thursday be installed as the Cavendish University Chancellor.

Jonathan, who was appointed the university’s third Chancellor in June, assumes office this Friday, August 27, 2021.

He previously served as the 14^th President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He replaces the late Benjamin Mkapa, the former President of the United Republic of Tanzania who was the second Chancellor of the University. Dr Jonathan holds a PhD in Zoology from the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

Earlier on, Goodluck was hosted by President Yoweri Museveni at State House Entebbe on Tuesday and the two leaders held talks on mutual interests, including business.

Museveni invited him to enjoy the country’s’ great weather describing it as God given.

“The greenery you see here is because of the altitude. Here where we are 1000 metres above sea level. This is part of the reason why Churchill called it the Pearl of Africa,” he said.

Goodluck applauded Museveni for his able leadership that has seen Uganda transformed to another level of development. He cited education among other areas that has increased in the country including Cavendish University.

The former Nigerian leader will this Friday preside over the conferment of Degrees and award of Diplomas and Certificates at Cavendish University’s 10th graduation ceremony to be held at Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort.

Established in 2008, Cavendish University Uganda is licensed and accredited by the Uganda National Council for Higher Education.
