Mohamed’s death was announced in a statement by the Transitional Sovereign Council without indicating as to where he passed on, but sources told Sudans Post that he died on Tuesday in the Egyptian capital Cairo.
“The President of the Sovereignty Council, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, mourns Lieutenant General Omar Mohamed Al-Tayeb, former First Vice President of the Republic,” the statement seen by Sudans Post reads in part.
The statement said that the Transitional Sovereign Council was “mourning [on behalf] of the Sudanese people” and that the former first vice-president is the people’s “national symbols and a righteous son of Sudan and its people.”
“The deceased was loyal to the soil of this country, and the owner of a white hand in various fields of political, military and security life,” the statement added, indicating that Mohamed had a “successful leadership capabilities that qualified him to work in many countries such as Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Egypt.”
Mohamed served as First Vice President under President Nimeiri and was sentenced to two consecutive 30-year jail terms in 1986 just four months after Nimeiri’s ouster.
He was found guilty of undermining the Constitution, instigating war against the state, treason and spying, The New York Times reported at the time.
