JUBA – Former deputy governor of South Sudan’s Warrap state Ayen Gabriel Mayor has resigned from the People’s Liberal Party (PLP) led by the country’s minister of humanitarian affairs and disaster management Peter Mayen Majongdit.

Ayen was appointed as deputy governor of Warrap earlier this year when President Salva Kiir Mayardit reconstituted the government of Warrap state as part of the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement signed in 2018.

In mid-August, Kiir dismissed her from the deputy governor position and appointed Debora Odual Okech as the new deputy governor of Warrap state without giving reasons behind the sacking.

In a statement on October 28, Ayen said she has ceased to be a member of the People’s Liberal Party with immediate effect, but then said she won’t publicly state why she decided to resign from the Mayen-led party to avoid discouraging other members of the group.

“Please accept this letter as formal notice of my resignation from being a member of People’s Liberal Party as of 28th October 2021,” she said in the strong-worded statement extended to Sudans Post.

“I have chosen not to publicly disclose the reason (s) of quitting your party in-order to avoid discouraging some of the members who are still subscribing to your political camp,” she added.

She went on to say “that some of those who went to PLP were motivated by the spirit that the PLP is a non-violent political party and an Alliance member to SPLM. Hence, it is not a crime for one to revisit his/her political destiny.”

“I must sincerely thank Hon. Aleu Ayieny Aleu, the Governor of Warrap State for the utmost respect and support he gave me while serving as Deputy Governor. I appreciate and I am very grateful to people of Warrap State and the Security Agencies for firmly standing with me especially when I acted as governor, we were able to jointly contain the insecurity in all counties of Warrap State,” she said.

“I therefore, urge all of you to continue standing with Governor Aleu whom I can describe as a correct choice of President Salva Kiir Mayardit at the right time,” she further said.
