RUMBEK — Eye specialists from Buluk Eye Center in Juba have begun operating on over 300 people with eye problems at Rumbek State Hospital in Lakes State.

Dr. Emmanuel Agwella, a specialist from Buluk Eye Center, told Sudans Post today that the team was conducting eye surgeries, specifically cataract surgeries, in Rumbek.

“We have come here, not for the first time. Several teams have come before, even as far back as September 2023. This time, we are targeting around 300 patients,” he said.

Agwella explained that cataracts are a common condition, especially in older people, where the lens of the eye becomes cloudy.

“We remove the old lens and replace it with an artificial one, which immediately improves vision,” he said.

The team is grateful for the support of the Lakes State government, the Ministry of Health, Rumbek State Hospital, and international organizations like the Italian Agency for International Cooperation, CBM, and CUAAM.

Agwella emphasized the importance of early eye care and prevention.

“Our eyes are crucial for our well-being and success. Don’t wait for a campaign to check your eyes. If you experience any vision problems, such as blurred vision, pain, or itching, seek medical attention promptly,” he advised.

Roda Alual Yak, a local resident, expressed gratitude for the eye specialists’ visit. “Last year, some of us missed out on the surgery. We urge the doctors to operate on those who were left out,” she said.

Peter Manyang Ayak, another resident, shared his experience.

“I missed out last year, but this year I came to get my surgery. Those who had surgery last year are seeing well, and there are no complaints. This program is a great initiative, and I thank God for bringing these doctors to help people in remote areas of Lakes State,” he said.
